First Date Conversation Starters
First dates can make even the most confident people a little anxious. Being prepared for them is one of the best ways to calm your nerves. Have a few conversation starters ready so that you’re prepared on any first date. The key to first date conversation is questions that will let you get to know your date and neutral topics. That means staying away from politics and religion and sticking to neutral getting to know you subjects.
Ask them about themselves. I know you’ve heard this a thousand times. Everyone’s favorite subject is themselves. Always ask them: how are you? This seems super basic but there may be personal subjects that people won’t bring up unless you give them the opportunity. It also shows that you’re interested in them. Ask if they have any hobbies, or if you know their hobbies, what they’ve been working on lately. Ask if they’ve traveled or if what they will be doing for vacation.
Talk about what you’re doing. This is a very neutral subject and a great way to fill an awkward silence and start a new conversation. If you all are at a bar, talk about the drinks, the music, the DJ. If you are meeting for lunch, talk about the lunch specials and your food and drinks. Little things like your food are a great place to get a conversation flowing because they’re very neutral topics but they can still be fun to talk about.
Use current events as conversation starters. You don’t have to talk about world events in a social setting. Not everyone is interested in the newest bill being passed or political debates. Current events can be just about anything going on. Current events can be new stores opening up or new things that are happening in your company. Be broad to try to strike up a conversation about something both of you like.
Bring up your own life a little. Don’t talk their ear off but giving a short summary of what’s going on with you is a good way to make someone feel comfortable with you and steer the conversation in a new direction. It also may spark some stories the other person has about their own life. If you just bought a new house, talk about it. Let them know if you’re going back to school. If you’re changing jobs, fill them in. Just about anything can spark a new conversation.
Flirting topics make a great conversation spicy. If you’re interested in your date, mix these flirting topics in with personal conversation topics. These shouldn’t be long discussions; they just set the tone and add a little flavor.
Complement them. Don’t overdo it though, just one is enough but it shows you’re paying attention and are interested. Complement their choice in restaurants, their hair, or their watch. Steer the conversation toward attraction when you get the chance. Don’t overdo it but some topics easily transition into a flirty direction. What’s your idea of the perfect night Look for chances to turn regular topics into flirtatious conversations. Use innuendo occasionally and be playful. Mixing flirtatious conversation with personal subjects is a good way to make first date conversation great.
