We all understand the difficulties that come with relationships. But one of the best tools we can use to fix the kinks and reduce the wear and tear of relationships is patience – preferably a lot of it. Patience has been defined as what we lack for the driver in front of us and demand from the driver behind us.

In truth, patience is nothing more than time.

We need time before we speak. Think of a time when someone was not patient with you when you needed them to be. How did it feel? Worse, didn’t it hurt to have your capabilities doubted due to a lack of patience? Remember the golden rule at all times – do not do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you, and apply it when trying to maintain your patience when dealing with somebody else.

Time before moaning and groaning. Patience takes time, we all know that, but so does manifesting anger in its many ways, may it be through complaints, sarcasm, screaming and general irate behavior. All it takes to resolve a kerfuffle, a rhubarb, or whatever you may want to call it, is patience – lack of it makes such conflicts even worse.

Time to just let things run their course. Things may have to run their course – your interference just might escalate things. It does not help our cause any if we lose patience and refuse to wait for a proper resolution.

Instead of growling like an unfed dog, grin like a Cheshire cat – say “good morning” instead of asking what’s so good about the morning. How much time does it really take to give someone a small nod or a pat on the back? Our lives are workaday lives, and it is no longer common to think about the difference we could make in the lives of others.

The lack of patience is the key to so much unhappiness and grief in this world, when all it requires is a little time on our part. Again, we cannot underestimate the fact that patience is the number one tool in our shed, a gift from God when it comes to strengthening relationships. And it is through what the Lord has given us that we can give to others by showing patience, which is what we really want to receive in the first place.
