Some Online Dating Stories Are Like Fairy Tales
There is something in the human psyche that makes us fascinated by the macabre. Online dating stories that have a pedophile luring young girls to torture and death in a box are sure to catch the attention of the public. Journalists slaver at the mouth at the prospect of getting such a story.
However, the new ways that there are now to meet one another are becoming more mundane as the novelty wears off. In many cases a couple may meet each other online, then at a coffee shop from where they may walk away, sadly bored or indifferent. As we now live in a global village there are times when one may meet another person on another continent. Physical contact then becomes more of an issue.
A South African widower mournfully browsed a site, some time after his wife had died from cancer. He made contact with a Russian woman of about his own age. They corresponded for some months. She told him of her poverty and he explained that he was wealthy, and rashly offered to marry her without ever having touched her.
The man booked a ticket to Russia and arranged to stay at a hotel. He met his future wife’s family who spoke loudly in Russian. He shouted back in English and the young people translated. The Russians did not seem to be worried by the man’s age, his obesity or his face that had been scarred by acne many years before.
The two children were charming, well mannered and beautiful. The boy was ready to start university and had been successful at school. The girl was a striking blond, with blue eyes and a vivacious personality. She was about to start high school and was the kind of girl who could notice an old man kindly. In fact she seemed like the daughter that he had dreamed about for much of his life.
After a day of meeting his new family the old man returned to his hotel. He sat on the edge of his bed and found himself smiling at his toes. There was a rustle outside the door, and a light knock. Surprised, he opened the door. There she was, his new wife in a deep red dress and black scarf framing her face. As in many online dating stories everyone lived happily after that.
